ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (April 5, 2024) – The departments of Military Science (Army Senior ROTC) and Math, Computer Science, and Engineering Technology at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) have tag teamed to host the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and Army Expo, an official event of the 2024 North Carolina Science Festival presented by RTI International.

The half day event is Friday, April 26, at 9 a.m. at various sites throughout the campus, including the open field outside the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center and the Virtual Reality (VR) and Esports Lab inside Lane Hall.

One of the event’s goals is to open the minds of any age student curious about or unfamiliar with STEM and military careers, organizers said.

“During planning, we were very careful to include a myriad of experiences that will have an impact on everyone who attends,” said ECSU Mathematics professor, Shatoya Covert.

Representatives from the Army National Guard, STEM Outreach of College of Albemarle (COA), the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Office, Port Discover of Elizabeth City, as well as ECSU engineering and emergency management faculty will be on hand. The event is designed to offer the campus and greater community the opportunity to explore varied career fields that are becoming increasingly popular and in demand.

Scheduled throughout the day are solar energy and hydrocar activities, demonstrations at the ECSU Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) field, and an interactive STEM activity sponsored by the 4-H of Camden County. Port Discover will also present their magnetic program which caters to middle and high school students.

ECSU Department of Military Science Department chair Lt. Col. Julie Kendrick said, “This event will be a great opportunity for students to interact with soldiers and cadets to learn about different career opportunities available in the US Army.”
